The idea is to encourage boats from both fleets to make a concerted effort to go to these events. For each event the North Fleet Captain and the South Fleet Captain choose 2 boats from their fleet to compete. The winning Fleet is then determined based on the results of those four boats. A boat can only be chosen twice if all of the other boats entered have already been chosen for a previous CALIFORNIA CUP event. Since there are three events, at the end of the season one of the Fleets would be the overall CALIFORNIA CUP winner. The Fleet Captain from the winning fleet would be presented a perpetual trophy at the end of the last event.
