The fleet in Northern California has just gained it’s 10th Open 5.70. Open Sailing would like to welcome Frank Ross to the fleet. The boat will be delivered in February 2011 and Frank will be racing in the SCYA Midwinters out of Marina del Rey before trailering his new boat back to San Francisco.

Definitely the highlight of the 2010 Open 5.70 racing calendar, Long Beach Race week saw a record 15 Open 5.70s on the starting line. Open Sailing was there in force and had a professional videographer on a chase boat with a nice HD camera to capture the action. Many thanks to Jeff who trawled through almost 6 hours of footage and put together this little video.

USA 300 was launched today and we took her our for a sail with the new owner Jeff. It was a perfect southern california fall day – almost endless visibility, blue water and a good breeze! USA 300 will be based in Northern California and is the 9th boat in the Bay Area. Click through for more pictures

For the first time this year, there was 5 Open 5.70s racing the Frank Guernsey Singlehanded Challenge. “Chupacabra”, the red Open 6.50 was also racing. The race takes place out of Redondo Beach, CA. The owners motored to the race course (over an hour sail/motor) and entered the race just in time, within minutes of the starting sequence. The race was a 6 mile W/L race. With an overcast and light weather the battle for first place in the Open 5.70 fleet was tight with 3 changes in lead during the race course.

- Peter, on USA 278 in Westhampton Beach, NY. Peter’s boat is currently being delivered from LA to NY. The driver, as we update the news is driving through Oklahoma. Peter’s boat will be delivered on Friday and will most likely be sailing over the weekend!

- Diane on USA 279 from Marina Del Rey, CA. Diane’s boat is coming out of the factory on Thursday. Diane will be soon practice on her orange 5.70 out of Marina Del Rey. Diane, will you be all dialed in for the Harris Series at the end of August?

Start Line crowded with Open 5.70s

Long Beach Race Week is one of the biggest events on the Southern California racing calendar. This is the 2nd time that the Open 5.70s have held their Pacific Coast Championships at this event. The venue is ideally suited to the Open 5.70 with breezy conditions and protected waters inside the extended break water. With only one month since the suceessful Cal Race Week where 8 boats took the start the fleet has already grown to an impressive 11 Opens making it the 2nd largest fleet at Long Beach Race Week (only 2 boats behind the J105 class). The Open 5.70 has 11 boats entered in Long Beach Race Week this coming weekend (June 26th-28th). This makes it the second largest one-design fleet in the regatta – only 1 boat behind the J105 fleet of 12. Long Beach Race Week is also the Pacific Coast Championship for the Open 5.70 so the stakes are high and the racing promises to be close.
