In the June issue of Sailing World in the SAILORS’ FORUM on page 8 there is the following letter from a reader…
Go Fly a Kite.
The sailing revolution has happened in the form of kiting. You can get on the water for under $2,000. Kiteboarding is easy to learn, and it requires minimal physical strength to get the most intimate connection with the wind. It’s hugely popular, attracting many non sailors to the sport.
Where I think there’s room for renewal is in the daysailor / club racer category. While fun and fast, skiffs are too intense to be enjoyed casually with family or taken for a leisurely evening sail. If someone were to develop a J/24-all-rounder version of the Mini 650, we’d have it all – a boat that can be weekeded, trailed to regattas, enjoyed on relaxed cruises, and, most of all, ripped fast downwind or around a race course.
Does anyone else see the potential for something like this?”
Hadrian Corning (via email)
Not only do the folks at Open Sailing see the potential for such a boat, they produce two high-performance day sailors – the Open 5.70 and the Open 6.50 – designed for knocking around the cans, heading offshore, or breaking out the wine and cheese. Check them out at www.opensailingusa.com

The October issue of Sailing World includes an article about their Boat of the Year Nominees which includes the Pogo 2.
“The Pogo 2, popular among the European singlehanded set, is the production-design of choice for Mini-Transat competitors. Following years of refinement and numerous ocean miles, the systems on the 21-footer are all sorted out for a turn-key mini ocean racer. Open Sailing in Marina del Rey, Calif., is the U.S. builder. $55K“
