USA 812 “New England Style”

The 3rd Pogo 2 “made in the USA” was delivered on May 27th to the Hamptons and launched out of Sag Harbor, NY. The Pogo 2 crossed the USA, escaped a couple of tornados in Oklahoma and the flood out of Missouri to arrive Thursday night in Sag Harbor. On Friday evening, the boat was cleaned up and the foils were installed. The guys at the Sag Harbor Boat Yard were amazed how simple and quick it was to securely fit the Pogo 2 keel in the boat. We decided to leave the boat overnight on the hoist and were ready to launch first thing Saturday morning. The mast went in, and we dressed the boat up during the day, getting ready for the first sea trial Sunday.
Sunday morning, the wind picked up and we quickly sailed out of the harbor. In five hours, we sailed in winds from 12 to 18 knots and had a great time. All sails went up and down several times as we were dodging the shallow water spots of Sag Harbor and the surrounding bay. Mast head spinnaker, Code 0 downwind, full main and full jib, downwind, reaching and upwind, we tested it all. With the wind picking up, and having to beat to weather on the way back to the harbor, we had a reef in the main, sailing along nicely.
Arriving at the breakwater, the harbor patrol rushed towards us as it turns out that sailing in between the moorings in not allowed. We took the main down and motored to the dock. It was a great sail out and we can’t wait to get more photos of the boat sailing again…hopefully soon.
USA 812 is definitely a must see: it is the first Pogo 2 with a very traditional “New England” style: the antifouling paint is dark red, the hull is a dark blue with a matching the cabin roof stripe. There is also a white racing line above the waterline and an additional thiner yellow line just below the deck. Note that the Pogo 2 sticker yellow line also matches the yellow line on the deck!
The new owner is probably going to race a little but mostly will enjoy his little rocket ship for some great downwind runs and daysailing! Fully equipped with a full set of sails from UK Halsey, an NKE Autopilot, and a complete and comfortable interior, we hope you’ll get the chance to check the boat out if you are in the Long Island area!
We are about to build another Pogo 2. This one will be based in Marina Del Rey, which means we will have 3 Pogo 2 in Southern California racing locally. We hope to start building a 5th boat very soon and will most likely be racing one design with the Pogo 2 in early 2012!
