8 Open 5.70s take the start at Cal Race Week
Cal Race Week is one of the largest sailing regattas held in Marina del Rey, CA. With nine one-design classes racing the Open 5.70 fleet was proud to be tied with the Farr 40 and Schock 35 for the 2nd largest one-design fleet – eight boats. With only one boat travelling down from San Francsico the local Marina del Rey fleet is now officially up to seven Open 5.70s strong.
The weekend consisted of two very different days of racing. On Saturday there was 12-15 knots of wind and a significant sea state that was enough to turn some people a little green. It was great conditions for the Open 5.70s which were able to take advantage of the waves making the downwind run a surfers paradise. Sunday was much lighter and Santa Monica Bay was unusually flat. With much shiftier winds Sunday was much more tactical and the racing was much closer which made the fight for the number one spot all the more exciting.
The top three were as follows:
1st - USA 276 - Robert Bray & Peter Drasnin 2nd - USA 169 - Tracey Kenney 3rd - USA 208 - Rich & Tony Festa
