Single Handed Transpac 2012

Jerome

The Pogo 2, USA 806, and it’s skipper Jerome Sammarcelli are officially entered in this summers Single Handed Transpac race from San Francisco to Hawaii! This will be the first time a Mini Transat has ever competed in the race – a historic first for Open Sailing!

The Singlehanded TransPacific Yacht Race takes place on even years (biennial) from San Francisco Bay, California to beautiful Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii – a distance of 2,120 nautical miles…alone. This event has been described by some of the racers as life changing.   For others watching from a greater distance, it may seem a puzzling and amazing event.

Follow the adventure here on Open Sailing and on Facebook on our Open Sailing Offshore Racing page.

It’s an Open 5.70 exclusive event being put on by the club and was driven by Jeff, the owner of USA 266, who keep his Open 5.70 in Newport Beach. We will be racing in the ocean off Balboa Pier which provides a great stand to watch the action. They have had their boat in Hawaii for almost a year and are excited to grow the fleet. They are offering amazing deals on new Open 5.70s and it’s a great chance to check out the boat in person and schedule a demo ride with them in the near future!!

2012 Catalina to Port on Pogo 2 USA 806

I was running a little behind that morning. The sun was out and there was no wind in MDR when I left the dock (9am). Shortly after leaving, I could see a wind line and quickly took 2 reefs in the main, just in time to be hit by 20 knots of wind. I didn’t see less than 20 knots until I finished.

Hawaii Ocean Expo

Open Sailing Hawaii

Open Sailing is going to be at the Hawaii Ocean Expo 2012 from April 21st – 22nd at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall! Stop by to see the Open 5.70 up close and talk to the Hawaii Open Sailing reps Joseph & Christin!

The Open 5.70 is a fun sport boat which is popular in California and Europe. It’s easy to sail and very manageable in a breeze. With an asymmetrical kite it can easily be crewed by 2 or 3 people and it’s planing hull ensures great performance. The boat is also beamy and carries the right amount of ballast to ensure thrills without too many spills!

Open Sailing Clinic & Regatta…

Nik

Open Sailing ran one of it’s first Open 5.70 racing clinics followed by an Open 5.70 exclusive regatta this weekend.

The clinic on Saturday was taught by Jerome Sammarcelli (North American Champion, 2011) and Nik Vale (Pacific Coast Champion, 2011). The clinic was an “open” forum that allowed the owners to discuss the techniques they use to get to the front of the fleet. (more…)
