Most of you know that we do a little more than “just building boats”. We actually sail and race them. In addition, we have a great high performance sailing center in Marina Del Rey where we run a sailing school, seminars and offer different sailing related products. 10 Open 5.70s competed in this years SCYA Midwinters making it the largest one design class sailing on Santa Monica Bay. Check out two great race reports from Jerome Sammarcelli on USA 275 who won the regatta, and Team Farnienteon USA 279 who is one of the newest members of the Southern California fleet.

Today Frank came to Marina del Rey to sail on his brand new Open 5.70, USA 305 called “Destiny”. Despite the windy forecast and the gale warning flags flying from the coast guard station we ventured out to see what was up… (more…)
Mini Guest Slip… |

Our slip in Marina del Rey has a Mini guest… another MiniTransat. This one is from San Diego and is in town to compete in this weekends PSSA Dan Byrne Race #2 to Bishop Rock. This is a 165 NM race that takes sailors out past Catalina and south to Bishop Rock, located at the infamous Cortes Bank - a dangerously shallow chain of underwater mountains in the Pacific Ocean. Last weekend, it was time to put the Pogo 2 to the test. For this first test, we chose to participate to the first race of the Whitney Bogart Series, organized every year by Los Angeles Yacht Club. This is without knowing that we were going to be the slowest rated boat (117), by a long shot: to name a few: Pendragon VI (-144), Pyewacket (-84), Medicine Man (-96) were still wondering until the start gun what we were doing in their play yard!!

This week the second US built Pogo 2, USA 806, was launched in Marina del Rey, CA (see gallery of photos & teaser video). This boat will belong to Team Open Sailing. It will be campaigned on West Coast in the Berger Series, Whitney/Times/Bogart Series, PSSA Singlehanded Dan Byrne Series and more (see all Pogo 2 events). It will also be available for demo sails – if you are interested in the boat don’t hesitate to contact us and schedule your sail today!

This is the 2nd High Point race on the Southern California One Design Calendar. The SCYA Midwinters Regatta take place on February 19th & 20th and is hosted by Cal Yacht Club in Marina del Rey. This is a huge event in Southern California where more than 600 boats compete at 30 different venues up and down the coast. With a local fleet of 11 Open 5.70s as well as some visiting boats from San Francisco there is going to be a lot of competition on the starting line!
The artwork for the SCYA Midwinters features the winning Open 5.70 from last years event – Michael Gough, on USA 186 “boracic”.
