Start Line crowded with Open 5.70s

Long Beach Race Week is one of the biggest events on the Southern California racing calendar. This is the 2nd time that the Open 5.70s have held their Pacific Coast Championships at this event. The venue is ideally suited to the Open 5.70 with breezy conditions and protected waters inside the extended break water. With only one month since the suceessful Cal Race Week where 8 boats took the start the fleet has already grown to an impressive 11 Opens making it the 2nd largest fleet at Long Beach Race Week (only 2 boats behind the J105 class). Eleven Open 5.70s docked at ABYC waiting for the first day of racing at Long Beach Race Week.

The Open 5.70 has 11 boats entered in Long Beach Race Week this coming weekend (June 26th-28th). This makes it the second largest one-design fleet in the regatta – only 1 boat behind the J105 fleet of 12. Long Beach Race Week is also the Pacific Coast Championship for the Open 5.70 so the stakes are high and the racing promises to be close. With 3 boats on display Open Sailing put on quite a show. The lure of sailing with the pros kept both Nik and Jerome busy. As the afternoon went on the breeze picked up and watching the Open 5.70s reach past in the channel was more than enough to get people excited about going sailing. Despite the smaller than expected crowds the event was still a great success.

The weather station at the UCLA Marine Aquatic Center has been providing the community with up to date wind (and other weather) information for the last few years. In recent times their weather station has become a victim to the constant exposure to the elements. In order to support UCLA MAC and the local sailors that use their website Open Sailing has kindly donated a brand new weather station. Open Sailing has also been working closely with MAC staff improving their website which now features an iPhone page for easy mobile access to current wind conditions and will soon feature real-time weather information.

We finally found a little time to get the moth wet! After sitting in front of our office taunting us for months it was great to splash it and go play in the Marina del Rey channel. With Peter Drasnin on board it was a fierce competition to see who would be the first to get on a foil. After Jerome and Nik struggled to find their groove in the gusty channel conditions, Peter took to it like a pro. Using all his Laser experience he soon got the boat up a foil – but only for a second before wiping out. More pictures here.

This coming weekend (June 20-21) there is a small boat show in Marina del Rey hosted by Esprit.

We are going to have a boat on a trailer at a booth and TWO more boats in the water. The two boats on the water will be taking people out sailing – for a small charitable donation. The plan is to do a little match races around the Esprit Marina (Basin B & C).

The show runs from 10-5 on both days. For more information check out the boat show flyer. This is a great opportunity to support Open Sailing and to support the sport of sailing in Marina del Rey.

Open Sailing was a sponsor for the SCCYC Lido Fleet 2 Invitational regatta. Jerome and Nik were also on the RC boat and mark set boat to help out during the regatta. Open Sailing also ran the Kattack Performance App for the “B” fleet – check out the races here and some photos here. Open Sailing’s new 18ft inflatable rib. The goal is to be able to support the Open 5.70 class it can be used for coaching, support on the race course, helping out the race committee, etc, etc.
